Espresso Theory and Maintenance

This course serves as an excellent foundation for any future pursuit of espresso education. TampTamp instructors guide students through the theory and vocabulary needed to prepare excellent espresso. In this course, we first ask the question, what is espresso? Then, using standards set by the Specialty Coffee Association of America, we definite the beverage and investigate its meaning. Students learn how to evaluate espresso using taste vocabulary and observations. Finally, students learn espresso machine and grinder equipment terminology, and how to clean and maintain espresso equipment, both to improve espresso taste and the longevity of equipment. Students in this course receive a complimentary copy of David Schomer’s Espresso Techniques and an instructional handout to provide ongoing support after students leave the course and return to their cafes.

By the end of this course, students can:

  • Evaluate espresso based on taste and texture
  • Define espresso according to SCAA standards

  • Practice proper maintenance techniques for espresso machine and grinders
